Antioxidants are a broad group of compounds that destroy free radicals, in the body, thereby protecting against oxidative damage to cells. Free radicals are molecules with at least one unpaired electron. As a consequence, they are highly unstable and reactive, always cruising around aggressively looking for other compounds from which they can “steal” electrons such as DNA, fats and protein, in an effort to become stabilized.
Free radical damage is implicated in the development and spread of many degenerative diseases including heart disease, cataracts and Alzheimer’s. Things like air pollution, smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, oral contraceptives, UV rays and many man-made chemicals increase our free radical exposure. Antioxidants are essential for good health and are found naturally in a wide variety of foods and plants, including many fruits and vegetables.
Research indicates that a diverse selection of antioxidants may be more important for protecting the body against free radical damage than a high dose of a single antioxidant. Different antioxidants scavenge different types of free radicals, so a combination of antioxidants forms a stronger antioxidant shield to protect the body.
Antioxidants also work synergistically with each other. Vitamin C, for example, recycles vitamin E that has been used up, selenium works in concert with vitamin E, zinc is needed to maintain normal blood concentrations of vitamin E, therefore a combination of antioxidants gives you the most mileage of any antioxidant intake.
